The Company

Stears is a Pan African data company. For global funds investing in Africa, Stears is the data and insights provider that enables quick, accurate decisions during the investment process. Stears users get access to industry, company, transaction, and macro data as well as constantly updated reports by researchers. Unlike other providers, Stears goes beyond just data to provide insights and context based on knowledge of local markets and delivers it all in an easy-to-use data platform. You can find more info about Stears here.

We are looking for a Client Solutions Lead with extensive experience selling data products to the financial services industry. The ideal candidate has brought in new business from fund managers focused on Africa. Other good candidates will have experience selling to fund managers and have a deep understanding of their workflow.

The Role

Why it’s important: Stears’ primary customers are fund managers (private equity, venture capital, etc.) and their advisors (investment banks, strategy consultants, etc.) who evaluate investment opportunities in Africa. We aim to provide our customers with the information (data, analytics, insights) on African companies, industries, and economies they need to make the best private company investments on the continent.

Private Equity plays an important role in developing the continent, but the lack of data makes it unnecessarily hard to pick winners, elongates the investment process, and makes exit opportunities opaque. Our Client Solutions Leads are responsible for understanding these key issues that PE Funds face and positioning Stears as a solution.

As the Client Solutions lead, your mission is to grow Stears’ annual recurring revenue by bringing in new business and advocating for the client inside Stears.

What it covers: As a Client Solutions Lead, you are responsible for building & managing client relationships, growing average revenue per customer, representing Stears at panels and events when necessary, fielding inbound calls, running a structured outbound process, closing deals, and ensuring our product is constantly evolving to fit the customer’s changing needs over time.

As a Client Solutions Lead, you will:

  • Achieve or exceed monthly Net Sales Targets by bringing in new logos.
  • Manage the sales process from beginning to end – this includes securing introductions with decision-makers and providing prospects with product demonstrations, detailed proposals, and consultations.
  • Employ a consultative approach to selling the Stears platform – a deep understanding of clients’ business models and problems, their workflow processes, and identifying the appropriate Stears solutions.
  • Accurately report internal administration: CRM activity log, sales pipeline forecasting, monthly reports to management, and proposal preparation.
  • Coordinate junior members of the sales team to ensure they are hitting revenue targets.
  • Collaborate with economists and other members of the Intelligence team to deliver on client needs where necessary.
  • Collaborate with members of the sales team to deliver on short and long-term revenue goals.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members, offering constructive feedback on their sales process and approach. Conduct regular reviews of their demos and client interactions to ensure high-quality standards, foster their professional growth, and support their development within the team.

Who you will work with: This role is part of the Sales and Revenue team. You will report to the Chief Revenue Officer.

We are looking for someone with:

  • At least eight (8) years of experience working in sales roles for global information products.
  • A proven track record of selling products or services above $15,000. You should have experience with consultative selling and the ability to close complex sales.
  • An established network in your target market, i.e., the investment community focused on Africa, is needed.
  • Strong familiarity with African investors, transactions, asset classes, capital markets, and so on, either through direct experience working on transactions or exposure from serving investors for many years.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred skills & qualifications: These skills & qualifications are not necessary but will be highly valued

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher)
  • Strong familiarity with private equity investors or private equity as an asset class.
  • Comfort discussing economies and industries in multiple countries within our coverage: South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and Egypt.
